Two men from Leicester have been sentenced for running a sophisticated fraud scheme that targeted vulnerable and elderly bank customers, stealing more than £187,000 across multiple months. Mohammed Hassan Farooq and Deva Raval, both 22, used fraudulent text messages impersonating organisations such as the DVLA, TV licensers, and retailers offering promotional deals. Victims who clicked the links were then contacted via phone and video calls by the fraudsters posing as bank staff, who tricked them into handing over passcodes and downloading payment apps to transfer funds. Investigators discovered that Farooq played a leading role by purchasing thousands of sets of stolen personal and financial data from criminal vendors on Telegram. Raval worked closely with him on the day-to-day execution of the fraud. Police arrested the suspects during a coordinated operation at a rental property in Warwickshire. At the Inner London Crown Court, Farooq was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison, while Raval received a two-year sentence, suspended for two years, after both pleaded guilty.
