MI5 and its director-general, Sir Ken McCallum, have avoided contempt of court proceedings after senior judges at the High Court ruled it would not be in the public interest to initiate further legal action. The Security Service admitted to providing false evidence across three courts as part of a successful 2022 bid for an injunction against the BBC, which prevented the broadcaster from identifying an alleged abuser and covert human intelligence source known as X. Although an earlier investigation by the Deputy Investigatory Powers Commissioner uncovered serious and systemic failings, including an officer lying about his role, the judiciary concluded that proceedings would be resource-intensive and unlikely to achieve more than already established reports. The judges added that any financial sanction against MI5 would merely deprive the agency of funds required for its operations. Sir Ken issued an apology, admitting that the agency fell badly short in this case. Source: The Standard
