Fixing London's housing crisis by building upwards.

Festus Akinbusoye, a Westminster Councillor and candidate for the Conservative nomination for Mayor of London, argues that the capital's severe housing shortage is a man-made problem exacerbated by decades of decisions at City Hall and Whitehall, particularly under current Mayor Sadiq Khan. Citing personal experience of being priced out of London despite hard work, Akinbusoye outlines a three-part reform plan to revive residential construction. Private housing starts have plummeted dramatically in recent years, while regulatory burdens, construction inflation, and overlapping planning frameworks have added tens of thousands of pounds to the cost of new homes. Akinbusoye proposes his London 'Yes' Plan to eliminate bureaucratic duplication, introduce a presumption in favour of well-designed mid-rise housing on brownfield sites, and set a viable twenty per cent general affordable housing threshold. Rather than choosing between towering skyscrapers and low-density suburban sprawl, the plan advocates for building upwards with five to six-storey mansion blocks inspired by areas like Maida Vale. Proposals also include unlocking underused public land, surface car parks, and suitable airspace, alongside reviewing industrial designations around major transport hubs like Old Oak Common and Park Royal.
