JD Wetherspoon, the well‑known UK pub operator, said it will try to open up to 25 additional sites over the next twelve months, adding to the 797 pubs it already runs and the 25 franchised locations it currently holds. So far in the new financial year the company has launched six managed pubs, including outlets at Manchester and Heathrow airports, Crewe, Ferndown, Dibden Purlieu and Kempston. The latest trading update revealed an 8.2% increase in like‑for‑like sales for the 14‑week period to 1 November, with bar sales climbing 9.4% and food sales up 6.8%. Growth slowed slightly in the most recent five weeks, falling to 7.5% compared with an 8.6% rise earlier in the quarter. Chairman Tim Martin said the start to the financial year was strong but warned that profit expectations remain heavily dependent on sustained sales growth. He highlighted the impact of rising labour costs, noting a widening price gap between a pint in a pub and the same drink in a supermarket, which he said has contributed to reduced employment in the sector.
