Marks and Spencer profits double despite mounting costs

Marks and Spencer has revealed that its profits more than doubled over a recent six-month period, bolstered by a strong revival in its food business which performed ahead of expectations. Adjusted pre-tax profits reached £403.2 million for the 26 weeks leading up to September 26, compared to £184.1 million during the previous year. Despite the positive figures and a 16.2% overall rise in sales to £9.25 billion, company boss Stuart Machin warned of an "onslaught of cost headwinds." The retailer has absorbed around £35 million in expenses related to packaging taxes, increased pay, national insurance, and Middle East logistical disruptions. Furthermore, sales within the fashion, home and beauty division fell short of their true potential as the business continues to manage the long-tail impact of last year's major cyber attack, which previously halted online sales for weeks.
