Australian councillor resigns after violent online comment probe

Noel Selby has officially resigned from Kempsey Shire Council following a controversy over an offensive and violent remark made to a woman on Facebook from his private profile. The comment, which stated "pity he hadn't bashed you", sparked widespread backlash and an independent investigation that concluded Mr Selby did indeed post the message, despite his claims that his account had been hacked. Although councillors unanimously called for his resignation during a meeting, Mr Selby initially maintained his innocence and refused to step down, stating he was against all forms of domestic violence. However, the council confirmed he has now tendered his immediate resignation. Mayor Kinne Ring stated that the departure allows the community to close a difficult chapter, while noting that a by-election will need to be held in the next three months amidst the council's ongoing financial challenges. Mayor Ring emphasized that public trust is much harder to restore than financial positions, stressing that holding public office is a privilege that demands high standards.
