A forty-year-old man has been formally refused bail in the Darwin Local Court following serious charges of murder. The legal proceedings center around an incident in the satellite city of Palmerston, where the accused allegedly stabbed his forty-seven-year-old partner twice with a kitchen knife while both were driving inside a vehicle. The victim sadly passed away from her injuries at the Royal Darwin Hospital ten days after the event. During the court appearance, defence lawyer Koulla Roussos requested bail so her client could care for his frail mother, who lives with multiple sclerosis and was present in the courtroom. Crucially, the defence indicated that a trial argument would focus on an element of defensive conduct, asserting that the victim had been behaving erratically and attacked the driver with the same knife, leaving the accused with an injured hand. In contrast, Crown prosecutor Rhiannon McGlinn strongly opposed any form of release, highlighting the defendant's previous criminal history concerning violent knife crime and arguing that proposed conditions could not mitigate community safety risks. Judge David Woodroffe ultimately denied the bail application, noting the gravity of the accusation and the lack of satisfaction regarding public protection. The legal matter is officially scheduled to return to court for a dedicated directions hearing. Source: Just In #Australia #Darwin #Court #News #Legal
