Research conducted by Deep Relief reveals that ninety percent of surveyed Brits experience worsened aches and pains during colder weather, while eighty-three percent report increased discomfort due to frost, ice, and snow. Pharmacist Noel Wicks points out that this phenomenon is not imagined, referencing a study by the University of Manchester involving over thirteen thousand participants that linked higher humidity, lower atmospheric pressure, and stronger winds to heightened pain levels. The impact is significant, with forty-one percent of respondents finding it difficult to get out of bed because of pain, and twenty-two percent suffering from back, muscle, or joint pain most of the time. To combat these issues, Mr Wicks recommends adopting an anti-inflammatory diet rich in colourful fruits, vegetables, and protein sources such as chicken, eggs, tofu, and fish, which can improve markers of inflammation and support healthy muscles and joints. A comforting chicken soup, available for as little as fifty-five pence a tin, alongside vegetable-rich stews and stewed fruits, serves as an excellent dietary support. Additionally, maintaining hydration during cooler months is crucial to keep joint tissue lubricated, and Mr Wicks suggests warm tea and herbal infusions when cold water is unappealing. Other practical recommendations include targeted cooling pain relief, proper warm-ups and dynamic stretches before exercising to prevent stiffness, checking sleeping positions and mattress support to avoid morning discomfort, and taking a warm bath or engaging in gentle stretching before bedtime.
