The key figure in the nickel corruption case is abroad

The Indonesian Attorney General's Office has made significant headway in an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption surrounding nickel governance and mining activities in Southeast Sulawesi, covering the period from 2013 through 2025. Authorities have identified a central figure, known as AK, who is believed to control five distinct companies operating within the sector, including PT BSJ, PT KA, PT ANI, PT AMI, PT AMIT, and PT HJ. However, investigative efforts have established that this key individual is currently located outside of Indonesia. In response, the Director of Investigation at the Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes has confirmed that the agency is closely collaborating with immigration authorities to trace the suspect's exact whereabouts and ensure accountability. Alongside tracking the prime individual, investigators recently executed coordinated searches across six locations in Jakarta with the assistance of digital forensics teams. These operations yielded substantial physical and digital evidence, including electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, and closed-circuit television systems, alongside significant amounts of cash recovered from multiple sites. Specifically, authorities seized billions of rupiah in cash from the targeted locations as part of the broader evidentiary collection process. The probe centers heavily on regulatory violations and illicit practices in mining governance, notably involving permit extensions and production processes that allegedly bypassed established legal frameworks. Investigators have already examined dozens of witnesses and are actively reviewing state official involvement regarding the issuance of mining permits and sales operations. As the inquiry progresses, the Attorney General's Office remains focused on strengthening the legal framework of the case before transferring the files to prosecutors for formal proceedings.
