Elections BC has initiated the official final vote count nearly two weeks after the provincial election concluded. Although the B.C. Conservatives, led by Lorne Doerkson, already secured a decisive majority government, several individual ridings remain exceptionally close. Candidates such as New Democrat legislator Stephanie Higginson and Conservative hopeful Kris McNichol are experiencing a tense wait as approximately 150,000 mail-in ballots, along with absentee and assisted phone votes, are finally processed. Elections BC announced that uncounted votes inside certification envelopes must undergo rigorous checks against voter lists to guarantee eligibility and prevent duplicate voting. Mandatory separate recounts will take place in specific ridings where the current preliminary margin is fewer than one hundred votes, such as Ladysmith-Oceanside and Burnaby-South Metrotown, while other tight contests like Cowichan Valley and Kelowna Centre are also under close observation. Candidates have expressed mixed feelings about the prolonged process, ranging from personal anxiety to patience and trust in the electoral system. While some contenders have already participated in legislative preparation schools in Victoria, others await the outcome to determine the final strength of the opposition in the provincial legislature. Official results are scheduled to be published as verification procedures conclude. Source: The Globe and Mail
