Maria Bakalova shines in the new Borat sequel.

The much-anticipated sequel, formally titled "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," finds Sacha Baron Cohen returning to the character fourteen years after the original cultural phenomenon. This time, however, the narrative is vastly elevated by the incredible breakout performance of Bulgarian actor Maria Bakalova, who plays Borat's fifteen-year-old daughter, Tutar. Raised under oppressive conditions and taught that women have virtually no autonomy, Tutar stows away on her father's mission to present a bizarre bribe to the American regime. Along the way, the film cleverly uses satire to hold up a mirror to an America saturated in misogyny and disinformation. The production gained widespread attention prior to its release following reports surrounding Donald Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani, whose susceptibility to a honeytrap orchestrated by Bakalova confirms the ease with which prominent figures can be duped. Rather than relying solely on shock value, the film embeds a subtextual call to action for women to reclaim their power both socially and at the polls. While Baron Cohen continues the provocative style of humor seen in his previous work, it is Bakalova's total commitment and sharp comedic timing that anchor the film's feminist-leaning core, proving she is more than capable of carrying the franchise forward.
