I tried a selection of cornflakes (Image: Mia O'Hare) Cornflakes remain a breakfast staple and rank among the most favoured cereal choices. For families throughout the UK, this cereal has established itself as a reliable and traditional option thanks to its mild taste. It makes an ideal morning meal, and numerous varieties are available on the market. Most supermarkets stock their own brands, while Kellogg's offers its renowned Corn Flakes. Given the range of choices and the varying prices, I opted to conduct a taste test to determine which offers the best value for money. I sampled cornflakes from Asda, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi and Marks and Spencer. I measured them against Kellogg's in terms of taste and price. I thought the cornflakes would be difficult to distinguish, yet there were some surprising variations. I tested the cereals both dry and with milk to evaluate their true flavour. Asda (left) came last place (Image: Mia O'Hare) At the bottom of my rankings sat Asda. While the cereals looked virtually identical to those offered by Tesco, Marks and Spencer, and Aldi, they possessed a distinctive taste. I found them to be less sweet and less crunchy than the Kellogg's variety, with a dry texture. The absence of flavour and sweetness proved detrimental to its score. Tesco followed, sharing a position with Marks and Spencer and Aldi. Tesco's cornflakes proved crispy and less dry than Asda's. It serves as a satisfying alternative to the branded variety and possesses a markedly lighter appearance. They're less sweet than Kellogg's Corn Flakes, but the taste is so similar to Tesco and Aldi that they can't be told apart. The Aldi cereal featured a solid texture that produced a satisfying crunch with every mouthful. However, it lacked the sweetness present in Kellogg's and had a rather dry flavour. Kellogg's was beaten by Lidl (right) (Image: Mia O'Hare) There's a reason Kellogg's Corn Flakes continue to be a morning-meal essential. They achieve the perfect balance between sweet and savoury, with the correct level of crunch - neither excessively hard nor overly soft. The majority of supermarket alternatives found it challenging to recreate Kellogg's taste, allowing it to distinguish itself from the rivals. When I opened Lidl's cornflakes, it became instantly clear they had the strongest resemblance to the branded item. The cereal is darker than alternative supermarket varieties, reflecting Kellogg's visual appearance. Of all the supermarket options tested, Lidl matched Kellogg's in both appearance and flavour. The cornflakes perfectly replicated the brand's taste and texture, and at 95p, there's little reason to choose the branded alternative on your next shop. Its blend of quality and affordability makes it my champion. Mia O'Hare is a Senior Spare Time Journalist working across Reach PLC.
