I make tastier mashed potatoes by adding 1 everyday ingredient — not butter

These potatoes were some of the best I've ever made (Image: Getty) A fortnight ago, I was preparing one of my go-to autumnal dishes of bangers and mash . I had my potatoes on the boil, gravy bubbling away and sausages ready to be fried when I suddenly realised I'd made a crucial mistake. I didn't have enough butter to prepare my mashed potatoes the way I prefer them, which is absolutely loaded with fresh, creamy butter. I could have popped to the shops, but the weather was awful and quite honestly I couldn't face it. Rather than venture out into the cold, I started rummaging through the depths of my fridge for a suitable substitute. Tucked away at the back of the shelves was a half-used pot of cream cheese, and I thought "Why not?". This is a delicious addition to mash (Image: Getty) As it happened, the cream cheese proved to be a game-changing ingredient, making my mash amongst the finest I've ever tasted. I thought it might taste somewhat tangy and odd, but instead the potatoes were rich, velvety and wonderfully savoury. I used what little butter remained, perhaps a tablespoon's worth, and then roughly five tablespoons of cream cheese together with a dash of milk. I seasoned it with salt and pepper, and the moment I tried it, I knew I'd struck gold. It's certainly a touch more indulgent than standard mash, but as an impromptu alternative I don't think I could have fared much better. I didn't work from a recipe when I discovered my ideal replacement, but if you fancy trying it yourself, this recipe from Allrecipes has glowing reviews. One reviewer commented: "These mashed potatoes were so good! I have never added cream cheese before, only sour cream and the cream cheese adds so much creaminess and a bit of tang." Another added: "They were very rich and so good. You may want to add less cream cheese and add more if needed. I'll try this again!".
